Today, I experienced something that I have never experienced before — ever.

The right person . . . at the right time . . . for the right reasons.

Enough said!

Youth.

I have been very embarrassed today as I was directly or indirectly engaged in conversations about the difficult time our older youth experience in the United States. While we claim to be the “land of opportunity” for most, we definitely have lost our edge. Our youth have figured this out, and they comment . . .

“I barely have enough money to live on . . . how am I going to save?”

“College is too expensive and the return on that investment isn’t worth it.”

“I don’t think I should have to do it for free.” (a young man referring to his major corporation’s expectation that he document his intellectual know-how and turn it over to the company — for free and with no credit to his hard work.)

I end this post with three questions:

1. What is enough money for a young person to live on today?

2. What should college cost?

3. How should human capital be compensated?

Managing the process of change. Just do it.

While so much change swirls around us I am encouraged by those who understand process and want to make it happen. They inherently know it will make the difference as to whether change is productive and sustainable, or not.

Conversely, I am fearful of those who think that process is unnecessary and that decision-making must be centralized. There is no room for autocratic leaders in the era in which we live. Their time has passed. A new day has arrived.

For all leaders trying to make change, don’t ask for permission. Just do it.

Critical Thinking Matters.

I think that every person running for an elected office should be required to take a standardized test for critical thinking. If they don’t pass, they don’t pass GO!

Consistency matters.

Business leaders not only need a plan of action, they need consistency in executing it.

Consistency can be found in using a good tool to manage the process, regular feedback from peers who help make you accountable, and commitment to taking action . . . consistently.

Life as we know it.

After watching “The Green Zone” this afternoon I am convinced — more than ever — that our leaders continue to lead us down a path of destruction and no return. For our planet to be saved we must respect life and make leaders accountable for their beliefs and actions. Most importantly, we cannot impose our culture on other cultures. Let us respect and embrace diversity.

Human Capital matters. . . finally!

What is important in life?

While change swirls around us, and unexpected challenges confront us daily, we need to ask ourselves: What is important in life?

Clean and safe water, food and neighborhoods. Access to health care and professionals who care. Safe streets and households. Self-worth. Contributing to our society and family. Self-esteem. Respect for the environment. Respect for each other. Lifelong learning. Love. Peace . . .
